Golden Roofing did a wonderful job replacing the 28-year-old shake roof on our 72-year-old, 4000 sqft, 2-story house, using extra-thick "presidential-style" composition shingles. It was a complex job because of (1) the size of the roof and multiple surfaces; (2) different rafters and sheathing in places due to three styles of roof construction over the years with remodeling; (3) complete replacement of the Dutch gutter system in the eaves; (4) replacement of 10 skylights; (5) temporarily disconnecting and supporting a large outdoor wood trellis that was structurally anchored to the old roof, and reconnecting it in a secure and water-tight manner when done; (6) helping with the removal of pool solar panels on part of the roof; (7) performing carpentry necessary to repair dry rot here and there that was revealed during the work. Of course, I got a couple of different price quotes for the work. They were similar in price, though you never know what the final cost will be due to contingencies that become evident only after they tear off the old roof (more on that later). The main things that sold me on Golden were (1) their ability to perform the whole job with their own crew, rather than require/recommend me to hire and manage my own general contractor to deal with the trellis and the skylights; (2) although it was late in the season, their ability to schedule and complete the work before the rains came. As someone who has worked with various contractors before, I found Golden's crew chief Luis and the hands-on owner Gil to be very communicative, responsive and diligent. They patiently answered any questions, responded faithfully to my requests/directions, and always asked me first in the few cases where there were different options to deal with a special situation (whether at different costs or not). When I got the final bill, I found that the cost of the contingent "extras" (such as providing continuous plywood to support shingles in old areas that previously had only 1x6 planks on 10" centers for the shakes) was very reasonable and well within budget. I would definitely recommend Golden Roofing. (Note on photos: We haven't yet redone the house's old exterior paint yet; at the bottom of the second floor, you can see where old stucco was removed to accommodate new flashing and new stucco there.)
