Gelber of Star Waterproofing came to evaluate my leaking balcony and was the only contractor who diagnosed the problem. He gave me a detailed quotation to fix the problems. He also noticed a problem with my roof and gave me another proposal to upgrade the ridge tiles and add more roof vents. His team did exceptional work on the roof problem and completed the work in one day. They were very efficient and cleaned up perfectly after. For the balcony we discovered a problem with a main beam where it had rotted from the leak. His team resolved the problem by removing the rot and splicing in a new support beam. This was done fairly on a T&M basis. After the work was completed I did get his team back to do a neater job on the finished painting etc. Gelber cooperated with no fuss. I recently hired Star to replace the flat commercial roof for an apartment building in Oakland (6,500 sq ft). I had an excellent experience from start to finish, and I’m glad to leave a glowing recommendation for this business. He does it right, and in some cases he went above and beyond the original scope of work. Fourth, his pricing was reasonable. You might not get a rock bottom price, but it’s usually a mistake to go with the low bid anyway. Instead, it’s important to find a contractor you can trust, who does great work at a fair price. And this is what you’ll get with Gelber. When we walked around to inspect the old roof, Gelber pointed out many construction details … especially things that the previous roofing contractor had done incorrectly, along with what he would do differently to improve it. We also took time to discuss the proposals we had received from other roofing contractors. Many of their recommendations were simply wrong. Gelber did a very good job of explaining his own recommendations, in a way that was helpful and educational. A new roof is a big investment, of course. But there are so many things I can point to that made this a great experience. Gelber was definitely the best person for the job, and I’m very happy with the obviously high quality of his work.
